YOUTH PROGRAMS
Genesis and Light has continued its Summer of Drama Project, which enlightens youth and their families of the dangers of teenage pregnancy, gangs, alcohol and drugs, as well as other at-risk behaviors. The project was performed its eleventh hit play “No Bed To Lay Their Head” in 2011 to an audience of more than 500 people. The project performed its tenth hit play “No Weapon Formed” in 2010 to an audience of more than 1,500 people. Each year this project has given over 40 at-risk youth exposure to various forms of media art including writing, acting, film, audio, video, music and video editing.
Genesis and Light’s previous play “Got the Whole World in His Hands” performed in the summer of 2009 and received positive reviews from the community. Our plays have been aired on public broadcasting television, enlightening over 1,500 youth and their families of the detriments of teenage pregnancy, alcohol and drugs, and other at-risk behaviors. Genesis and Light performed its first production in December of 2000. This production was performed to an audience of more than 100 people. This play was performed live at the Alamo Theatre. Despite limited funding, all of these productions were a great success and each production helped to sharpen and refine the talents and artistic expressions of youths, offering them an alternative to negative influences communicated through cultural and educational vessels. Consequently, it is critical that we continue the kind of community efforts that have contributed to empowering our youth, thus leading to declining trends in juvenile crime.
